Recycling

Curbside Recycling Program

Residential customers are issued one recycle cart.  If you are over filling your cart, you may also put additional recyclable items in a plastic bag and set it beside your cart, when setting it to your curb.

Alvin Recycles encourages all city residents to:

  • Preserve the environment for tomorrow and improve the quality of life in Alvin.
  • Recycle plastics, paper, household metals, cardboard, newspaper, and glass.
  • Help reduce use of landfills, save energy and resources!
Guidelines for curbside collection:

Recycle cart needs to be placed at curb by 7:00am on your recycle day. Recycle dates are determined by your address and will be the same day as your regular trash service.

Recyclable Materials

PAPER - Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, telephone books, mixed paper (Envelopes, notebook paper, softbound books, etc.) DO NOT include paper with any type of adhesive, waxed paper, etc.

ALUMINUM BEVERAGE CANS – All aluminum beverage cans should be empty and rinsed clean.

PLASTIC BOTTLES – One of the following numbers should be on the bottom of the bottle: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7. Plastic soda bottles (PET) and plastic milk or water jugs (HDPE) are the two recyclable plastics. Caps should be removed and the bottles should be rinsed and reasonably clean before placing them in the bin. (DO NOT include items such as plastic bags, Styrofoam containers, shipping “peanuts” or bubble paper.)  Bottles should be rinsed and reasonably clean before placing in the cart.

TIN/BI-METAL CONTAINERS – Containers such as fruit, vegetable and soup cans should be rinsed of all remaining food particles and reasonably clean. Lids should be removed and placed in the can and the opening “pinched” to keep the lid inside.

CARDBOARD – Must be broken down.

GLASS - Glass bottles and jars. Lids should be removed and the glass should be rinsed and reasonably clean before placing in cart. No broken glass.  (DO NOT include items such as mirrors, windows, ceramics and other glass products.)

Although it is not required to clean the item, by rinsing recyclables before placing them in the container will help reduce odor in the carts.

Through education and commitment, Alvin has more than doubled its efforts and tonnage within a year. Please join in and begin to help the city continue to reduce, reuse, and recycle for a better tomorrow.
