Sewer & Wastewater Treatment Division

Sewer -The Sewer Division has approximately 140 miles of sewer mains within the Alvin city limits. This division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of leaks, sewer stoppages, and fire hydrant maintenance.

Sewer Stoppage Information - The City of Alvin is responsible for maintenance on the portion of a sanitary sewer service line that runs from the city main to the customer's private property line in street right of ways or alleys and from the main to the edge of an easement where service connections exist in the back yards of connected structures. Should a customer experience sewer problems, the following course of action is suggested.

  • Before contacting a plumber, look on the property line for a black plastic box (should read "water meter" but is actually used for clean-out covers). Remove the black lid to find a clean-out with a white cap on the end of the pipe (some older lines will have a red clay pipe with either a metal or clay lid). Unscrew or remove the lid. If sewage is backed up in the pipe, the problem is in the city's portion of the service line or the main. Contact the Public Works offices at 388-4325 or 388-4326 to report the sewage stoppage. A maintenance crew will be dispatched to resolve the problem. If no sewage is backed up in this clean-out pipe, the problem is in the customer's private portion of the service line. The customer can then choose to either unstop the sewer themselves (if equipped) or to contact a plumber for help.

NOTE:
Do not operate a washing machine or dishwasher while experiencing a sewer problem. The force created by either of these devices when pumping the water into the sewer line could cause sewage to overflow from other devices such as toilets, sinks, etc. which could leak to damage floors or carpeting.

Wastewater Treatment - This division is responsible for the operation of the city's 5.0 mgd activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, which began operation in 1985. The plant is monitored at the federal level by the EPA in accordance with Permit #TX0024554 and at the State level by the TCEQ in accordance with Permit #10005-001. In addition to operational duties, most laboratory analysis needs are performed in house. This division is also responsible for the maintenance and operation of the city's groundwater well sites and sewage lift stations.
